Interments and inurnments or the opening or closing of a burial plot or columbarium niche shall only be conducted after notifying the Cemetery Administrator and receiving written approval to proceed.

Likewise, the placement of mausoleums, vaults, slabs, headstones, footstones, grave markers, coping, benches, grave fences, flag poles, etc., shall only be conducted after notifying the Cemetery Administrator and receiving approval to proceed.

To initiate an interment or inurnment or place a grave marker or ornamentation within the confines of a burial plot, locate the deed or certificate of use, complete a cemetery location form, and send it to the Cemetery Administrator as soon as possible.

The Cemetery Administrator will research, verify, and validate the information received, collect applicable fees, mark the appropriate location, and return written approval to the originating party, conveying authorization for burial or grave marker placement to occur.

Notice to Deed Holders

Deed holders are not to sell any burial plot without first offering it to the City at the original purchase price, as the City retains the option to buy back the plot before the deed holder sells it to any other individual who is not categorized as a qualified and eligible assignee.

Funeral Escorts

Pursuant to §32-5A-137, Code of Alabama 1975, as amended, no person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle within an intersection except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the law or the directions of a police officer or official traffic control device.  Funeral Home vehicles do not have the authority to stop normal traffic flow, block intersections, or disobey traffic signals while overseeing funeral processionals.

In our commitment to honor hometown traditions and to ensure a safe and organized journey for a decedent and their family and friends, the City of Prattville Police Department provides funeral escorts within the city’s Corporate Limits to cemeteries located in Prattville at no cost.

Please call the Prattville Police Department on weekdays at 334-595-0208, at least 48 hours before the funeral service, to schedule a police escort.

Grounds Maintenance

The city enlists the Urban Management Division of the Public Works Department to protect, maintain, and adequately care for its cemeteries.  Work crews are routinely scheduled to cut grass, prune shrubs and trees, regulate weeds, treat insects, and discard debris.

There shall be no groundwork, grading, leveling, excavating, or planting of trees, shrubs, sod, or invasive flowers without the express permission from the Cemetery Administrator.

Grave offerings left at a burial plot should be permanently attached to a grave marker or firmly affixed within the plot's boundaries. The city is not responsible for lost, misplaced, stolen, or damaged items.  Grave offerings are not allowed at columbarium sites.

If you notice erosion, water damage, pests, a fallen headstone, a damaged vault cover, or hazardous conditions, please get in touch with the Cemetery Administrator immediately.

Protection Against Loss

The City may carry such insurance for its benefit upon its cemeteries and their contents as it sees fit.  However, the City is not obligated to provide insurance for the benefit of deed or certificate holders.

Resources

The city maintains records of burial plots, lot locations, columbarium niches, and the names of the deceased and their dates of birth and death if known. In some cases, older survey maps and genealogical information are available. Extensive research is billed at the rate of $30.00 per hour after the first 30 minutes, and research fees must be paid in full before the release of information.
